first sale!

last week photographic arts + trade started stocking film and cameras. shortly thereafter, the camera, a lovely ricoh kr-5 35mm film camera, was sold, making photographic arts + trade a for-real working store! HOORAY!

what's exciting for us is even more exciting to dear departed ricoh, who is going on to start a brand new life on the east cost (which is where i found him, incidentally). after so long of sitting stagnant, he'll once again feel the joy of making photographs.

bon voyage, dear friend.

bigs thanks.

over the past few months i've been featured in quite a few of these new etsy treasuries. i wanted to give promotion to these sweet people who have showed off my work for me, but with no readers, to blog about them seemed a waste! But now, perhaps a few people may see this, and to those i say, behold:

Weekend Getaway
a lovely, breezy summer sendoff. it makes me think of the maritime provinces.

no sales yet!! what??
featuring interplays of yellows and blues. like laying on your back in a field, staring at the sky.

Twist and POUNCE!
an elegant introlude into fall colour; the savoury blending of subtle blues with the rich creamy cocoa browns that i've personally been so fond of lately.

Learning to fly"
the trend of blues continues, taking centre stage in this treasury. reminiscent of the titilating time of year when winter blossoms into spring.

B/W & Y
just as it promises, here, stark blacks and whites are commented by nearly solitary accents of yellow. sometimes a very electric combination, but also, can be quite soothing..

Anniversary POUNCE!
an extravagant throwback, and a rainbow of rich colour.

little pretties unknown
like seeing clips of someone's memory of childhood; very floaty, and whimsical.

Blue in the Face
the blues come back in full force, grabbing your attention right away. gorgeous 'forms'.

Undiscovered Beauties
such an invigorating colour scheme - greens, yellows, browns - encompassing nature's full lively spectrum from first bud to last leaf.

The Undiscovered
enticingly abstract, deftly clashing warm colours with cold. a successful list, too!

Where the Wild Things Are
the model's gaze draws me in and the soft, yet gruff pastels keep me there.

proto-photo

my first lens (more to come!):

whoa! whoa! hello!

So, i guess there have been a lot of changes since i tended the blogosphere garden last. where to begin?

Bonnaroo has come and gone, and all thirteen prints from my documentary series are up in the shop. all Bonnaroo prints are made-to-order, and certain things (paper, border, size, etc.) can be customized to fit your needs.

on top of that, i've turned some old test prints into up-cycled bookmarks. i think that i'll punch holes in them and add a colourful ribbon. stay tuned for an updated photograph.

In other news, i've started work on my newest project, homemade lenses! i have laid out on my work table an assortment of lenses, metal cylinders, and broken camera parts and i've just completed my first lomographic (there's got to be a better term?) lens. more to come in the weeks ahead.

is that all i've got? boy, it looks a lot bigger from way down here!

sleep tight, and don't let the bedbugs bite!

23 April 2010

My first stock of photographs is on the shelves, and now I need to start looking to the future: what's next?

Luckily for all, I already know what's next.

The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is drawing closer day by day, and I'm really starting to feel it. The weather is warm and the people are friendly. And it will only get thicker.

In that spirit, I'd like to announce the sooncoming of my series, "The Seven Huundred Acre Farm.", shot with my Holga last year at Bonnaroo 2009. The series is thirteen (13) prints long and consists of twenty (20) different images. Seven of the thirteen are diptychs, measuring a total of 6x13 inches between the two photos. The remaining six are single 8x8 prints. All images are, as per Holga, square.

Bonnaroo has really changed my life (and consequently my work), and this is my proudest work to date. I will be busy making all the preparations for its most careful printing and arrival. Each photo will be available for separate purchase, or the entire set as a whole, including the signed artist's statement and certificate(s) of authenticity, will be available at a much reduced price.

Because I have a special fondness for these images, I want them to be appreciated more than any others by those who i know have a strong kinship with their subject. Of all my work, I believe these to bring the most joy. For that reason I plan to expand the numbers available of each print (though they will still be quite limited edition) and keep the prices low, despite the much more time-consuming and costly process of film.

So look through them and start thinking which ones might look best on your wall, on your desk, or in your trailer at BONNAROO.

15 April 2010

oh, my dears,

it has been so long. i have heartily neglected my blogging duties, but there is a ray of hope:

my stores are open.

yes, you heard me right - many of you didn't think it would happen, but today (well, yesterday - and the day before yesterday) i've proven that i can do things, sometimes.

my photographs have been beautifully printed by devan at tricera imaging in vancouver. for a brief time i considered printing them in maryland, but i decided that as far as i'm concerned, devan is the man to go to for all things giclée. they're really gorgeous - the paper, the colours, the gradients! i sold two photographs the very day i picked them up. i'm very pleased.

and now they're up for the world's access!

http://mikiross.etsy.com

http://photographicartsandtrade.bigcartel.com/

there are thirteen individual prints going up on etsy, and one set of three on big cartel (originally made for my final show when graduating from focal point photography school).

i hope you'll all take a look at them. they're on special, introductory prices while supplies last, so if you love it, bring it on home to you!

much love,

miki ross

My question:

Why is it so hard and expensive to print Giclée in southern Virginia?

28 January 2010

This Blog is Now Open.

I have made accomplishments. Next on the list is to redesign my store front(s), then it'll be about time to head back to Vancouver and sort out all the physicalities of it - new products, inventory, shipping department - you know! Y'know?
